A cocktail party is a party at which cocktails are served. Sometimes they call it a cocktail reception. This kind of party was organized for purposes of social or business networking.
WHY IS IT CALLED COCKTAIL?
This story comes from New Orleans, where an apothecary by
the name of Peychaud (of bitters fame) served a mixed brandy drink in a French
eggcup & eventually the drink was named coquetier, the French term for an
eggcup. Peychaud's guests shortened the name to 'cocktay,' and eventually it
became 'cocktail
THE SAID ORIGIN OF COCKTAIL PARTY
Alec Waugh (brother of the novelist Evelyn) insisted in a
1970 Esquire essay that he invented the idea of drinks-before-dinner in the
1920s. Others point to a Tacoma Times article from April 1917 crediting a St.
Louis socialite, they said Mrs. Clara Bell Walsh, as the first to hold a party
devoted exclusively to mixed drink.
***WHAT TO WEAR***
FOR MEN
Cocktail dress code involves casual suits and dress shirts
for men, then add a tie or bow tie. But of course, you can wear something more
fashion-forward than your business suit. Wearing a tuxedo, a long black jacket
with tails, a white collared shirt, a white vest, a white bow tie, and black
patent-leather shoes. White or gray gloves are perfectly appropriate.
FOR WOMEN
Wear a floor-length evening gown, a knee-length dress with
heels, or your dressiest black dress. For women, cocktail attire typically
calls for a dress that finishes at or above the knees and high heels. They say “you can’t go wrong with a little
black dress “Although cocktail looks should always appear sophisticated, they
can also be fun and embrace exciting colors, embellishments, cuts, and unique
accessories. Also stay away from
super-short styles.
Avoid fabrics that are too casual, like chino, jersey, and denim. “They say to test if a hemline is appropriate, stand with your hands at your sides: The edge shouldn’t be higher than your fingertips. But for the most part, “cocktail parties are dressy-casual, so you can’t go wrong if you wear a top with some special details and a skirt or tailored pants, plus heels or fancy flats,” says fashion stylist Joseph Williamson. “
